Police officer transferred over viral assault video

The Officer-in-Charge of the Kuliyapitiya Police Crime Division is under investigation after a video circulating on social media showed him allegedly assaulting an individual with a pole, police said Wednesday.

Following the incident, the officer has been transferred to the Mawathagama Police Station and removed from his duties at Kuliyapitiya pending the outcome of the inquiry, the Police Media Division said.

The investigation is being conducted by a Senior Superintendent of Police under the supervision of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the North-Western Province.

Police confirmed the assault occurred recently, though the exact date was not disclosed. The video drew widespread public attention online, prompting immediate administrative action.

Disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, the Police Media Division said. (Newswire)
