Muting your microphone when joining a meeting in zoom App

If you enable Mute my microphone when joining a meeting, you can choose to mute your microphone by default when you join a meeting. By enabling this setting, your microphone will be disabled/muted upon joining each meeting, and you must manually unmute the microphone.

If participants are in a noisy environment or arrive late to a meeting, this setting is useful. Noise and disruptions can be reduced in this setting.

When joining meetings, your microphone will automatically be muted if the following requirements are met

  • Zoom desktop client
    • Windows: 5.0.0 or higher
    • macOS: 5.0.0 or higher
    • Linux: 5.0.0 or higher
    • Android: 5.0.0 or higher
    • iOS: 5.0.0 or higher

    How to enable Mute my microphone when joining a meeting

    Windows | macOS Disable audio by default

    When joining a meeting, I want to mute my microphone.

    1. Log in to Zoom on your computer.
    2. Go to Settings by clicking your profile picture.
    3. Select Audio.
    4. Tick the box that says Mute my microphone when joining a meeting.
    Disable video or audio by default when joining a meeting

    By selecting the following options after clicking Join, you can also disable audio and video.

    When joining a meeting, you should disable audio and video:

    1. Join a Zoom meeting by logging into the desktop client.
    2. Uncheck the Do not connect to audio checkbox.
    3. If you want to disable your video, select the Turn off my video check box.
    4. Select Join.
    Android | iOS Disable audio by default

    You can enable Always Mute My Microphone (Android) or Mute My Microphone (iOS) by following these steps:

    1. Log in to the Zoom app on your mobile device.
    2. Tap Settings at the bottom of the screen.
    3. Select Meetings.
    4. On Android, tap Always Mute My Microphone. On iOS, tap Mute My Microphone.
    Disable video or audio by default when joining a meeting

    By selecting the following options after clicking Join, you can also disable audio and video.

    When joining a meeting, you should disable audio and video:

    1. Join a Zoom meeting by logging into the Zoom mobile app.
    2. Then select Don’t Connect To Audio from the Join Options menu.
    3. Disable your video by tapping the Turn Off My Video toggle (optional).
    4. Press the Join button.
