Fly tying thread
IS there anyway we can get a sticky fly tying thread/fly's thread where we can ask questions about flys and tying and share different flys?

I am hoping to get some of these flies out for a few days on the water. I am also looking forward to some serious vise time as the daily allotment of darkness is gifted to us so we can pursue such endeavors.

Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007 Lets try this. Heres a, stonefly maybe pattern. Or just some random bug, bottom view.Heres a woolly bugger type pattern, I seen some people tying on curved shank so I thought I would give it a try. I like the look, probably just because its different though. I put leech hair on the body to keep it thin and was hoping I would be able to pick it out to give it the leechy effect but it did not work out. If I did less hackle wraps im sure it would work though.
Shortened the tail like you guys said to prevent fouling. Not sure what I am going to fish it for but I think a bass would eat it.
Been working on dragonfly patterns, will post em up later.

Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007 Afew more. Hopefully this year I will be able to fish for winter steelhead. Heres one of my dragon fly patterns, a bottom view. Heres the above view of another. Not really even sure if trout take dragon flies very often but if I scale it down I am sure I can catch a bluegill. And if I scale it up im sure I can catch a bass. These are both on a size 14 standard dry fly hook

I got so frustrated that i swithed to a hopper cuz i couldnt hook up on the gils. So i might try that and that wouudl help a ton!
Biggest bass i caught on a fly was a 4 lber on a big ole dragonfly. They work really well in farm ponds.
As far as trout i have seen trout in lakes taking dragonflys, so there they would work good.
As far as me tying, i got bored and tied up another two dozen pheasent tails for next season.
Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007Sweet so you think I should use a extra long hook and pretty much reverse tie it? Im not really sure of another way to tie the bend at the tail. This might be a bit challenging. I might be able to add a trailer hook to the tail. Dont really want to overly complicate a bluegill fly though.
Hey Nerveracker, I gots some questions for you. First off we were talking about counter rib. So you tie in your rib in the back of the fly dub to the front, tie in your hackle, wind it back and then use the rib to hold it down, I was just wondering if you could tie in your hackle at the front then wrap your thread to the back, then wrap your hackle through and use your thread to counter rib it. That sounds really confusing  Also "The reason you tie with a stinger hook is for short strikes" you said when we were talking about the trailer hook and fouling, I wanted to ask what this meant but never got to it. Thanks. Heres afew more. Tying some small midges.

Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007Anyone wanna share some coho flies? I want to tie some up but dont know where to start. And instead of just searching on the internet I was thinking someone here might have some first hand experience with a certain fly.
Tied up this which I think the name is a comet.
Caught my first coho in a small creek last week. Was pretty awesome. Nothing huge though.

Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007I believe I used, well the package says fish hair. Not really sure what it is though. First time I have ever actually used it, I got orange and have not had use for it till now. I did use it in a bluegill pattern though as well.

10,687 posts · Joined 2011It's nice looking stuff. However, it looks like the butt ends are out rather than the natural or natural looking ends. They should give the tail more action too. I usually wouldn't say anything, but I know you like feedback. Keep them coming. I enjoy this thread.
Ifisherkid Discussion starter 9,294 posts · Joined 2007Yea I trimmed the ends even though thats a no-no, but they are not natural looking anyhow. Im not sure what they use for the real pattern/recipe. Im more of a look and tie rather than follow the recipe, most of the time I dont have the exact materials anyhow and I will have to substitute.
Another thread Q, is denier 140 too big for common trout flies? And is denier 210 about right for larger salmon/steelhead flies? Thinking about trying Danville "Flymaster" plus. Any advice on it or reviews would be appreciated.
Anyone have some cool craft materials they use for fly tying? I always shop around when my ma goes to the craft store. I've found thread and wire so far. the wire is not very small but they have some 28 gauge that looks like it would work great. Also I got a bag of like 20 turkey biot strips for like 2 or 3$, that was a steal. Joann has got an ad in the paper almost every week for 50% off of one item, think im gonna get some craft fur from there and try to tie some minnow patterns.
Thanks. And someone post some flies. :anyone:

Not sure if this has been made a pattern yet but I really like it, its similar to a royal trude but its more so a streamer,
Found a size 18 hook so I thought I would tie a little mosquito.Too small to really see.
Anyone think that the smell of mint would scare fish off? I found a thing of dental floss and used it to tie up a mealworm immitation just to see how it would turn out. Should be a panfish killer, as long as the mint does not scare them away.
